SHANG SUMDO TO TSOMORIRI TREK
Features
Overview

This trek blends in itself the rocky mountains, comparatively warm weather of the first part and the harsh airy atmosphere and the plateaus of the second part. The colours of the Rocky Mountains are brilliant and they constantly change as the day progresses. The green camping grounds of Kyamar, Tisaling and Rachungkharu are ridiculously pretty. It is hard to believe that so much vegetation exists at an altitude of 17,000 feet. After Rachungkharu you will reached at Tsokar.  The brackish lake of Tso Kar is home to the endangered black necked crane. It is also a breeding ground for birds like the black-necked crane and the Brahminy duck. The high plateaus of the area are home to some rare animals such as the Kyang (wild ass), blue sheep, marmots, Himalayan Ibex and snow leopards.

The Changthang Plateau is known for its birds. Keep your ears open for songbirds such as the Horned Lark and the seed-eating Finch. The Brown Headed Gull, the most lively bird of this region, will bring back memories of Jonathon Livingston Seagull. The Bar Headed Goose, known to be the highest flying bird in the world, can also be found here.It can fly at altitudes of 25,000 feet, while migrating over the Himalayas, where oxygen and temperature levels are extremely low. The black bars on its head make it stand out from other geese.
